In a quality management system, a work instruction defines the detailed steps necessary to carry out a procedure. Work instructions are used only where they are needed to ensure the quality of the product or service. The level of education and training of the people with the usual qualifications to do the work must be considered when writing a work instruction. In a metrology laboratory, a calibration procedure is a type of work instruction.
