Iso is a Greek word root meaning equal. The International Organization for Standardization chose the word as the short form of the name, so it will be a constant in all languages. In this context, ISO is not an acronym. (If the acronym was based on the full name were used, it would be different in each language.) The name also symbolizes the mission of the organization – to equalize standards worldwide.
